Is candle soot harmful?

Jade: Hey Kara,

This is a question that a lot of people ask so I’m glad to get a change to answer it. One of the biggest myths about scented candles is that they might be toxic or harmful to burn around the house. The fact is that’s just not true! 

When you light your candle and the wax becomes fuel, the process of combustion takes place. That means that oxygen reacts to the waxas it’s being burned and produces soot. This kind of soot is different from the kinds caused by burning petroleum fuels or lighting a paraffin wax candle, which is a byproduct of petroleum. 

When you use all natural ingredients to create your candle like Jackpot does, the minimal amount of soot created is not harmful unless you literally stand over it to breathe the smoke directly into your lungs. So, let me be clear: DON’T stand directly over your candle and breathe in the smoke. 

That said, don’t worry if you accidentally breathe a little in by accident. Since Jackpot uses 100% natural soy wax, the amount of soot produced by your candle is minimal. That means that you – 

• never burn your candle for more than four hours,
• trim the wick to about ¼” before you burn, and
• let the top of the candle melt completely during the first burn. 

Another way to cut down on soot is to clear all wick debris out of the candle before you burn. So, remember: a little bit of soot is ok, but candle care is important!
