OK, you don't really need a candle snuffer but let's face it... it's just fun to be a little extra sometimes. Perfect for your next Sunday spa day, how fun is it to have a cute tray all set up with your jewelry candle and some classy accessories? Well, let me show you how to make this unique, easy DIY!
Materials:
- 1" Copper End Cap Pipe Fitting (found at any hardware store)
- 1/4" Wooden Dowel
- Copper Jewelry Jump Rings (see your local craft store)
- Drill
- Hand saw (or power saw)
- Stain (I used Minwax Red Mahogany)
- Steel Wool
- Paper bag or newspaper
- Gloves and safety glasses
- Paper towels or a rag
- *Optional: Copper spray or craft paint & painter's tape
- A Jackpot Candle to try out your new snuffer
Note: Don't be afraid to use power tools! They're really easy and they make the work so much easier. If you are apprehensive, however, find a friend who can help. That's what friends are for right?
Let's jump right into this!
1 - Start by prepping your pieces. If your copper cap has any spots you can easily clean those up with some steel wool and a bit of elbow grease. Next, you're going to grab your wood dowel, use your hand saw (or power saw) to cut it down to 8" and sand it to get rid of any roughness or imperfections. Then, take your drill and put a small hole at the very end of the dowel. This will become the handle of your snuffer.
2 - We've reached the messy partso put on your gloves, lay out some newspaper or a paper bag and have some paper towels ready to go. Grab your stain of choice and stir it up - I'm using Minwax Red Mahogany because I think the dark color looks amazing against the warm glow of the copper. Dip a paper towel or a rag into your stain and rub it onto the surface of the dowel. Take a clean paper towel and rub off any excess.
3 - Drill 2 small holes in the center of your copper cap equal to the width of your jump rings. Mine were about 7/16" apart. Safety tip: when drilling through metal you'll want wear a pair of safety glasses and go slow.
4 - Let's assemble the pieces! Take one of your jump rings and twist it to open it up. Slide the open end of the ring through the holes you drilled in the top of the copper cap and twist to close the ends back up. Take a second ring, open it up and slide it through the hole in the end of your stained dowel - leave the ring open. Attach this open ring to the ring on the cap and twist the ends closed to link the two pieces.
OPTIONAL:This last step isn't necessary to make your snuffer work properly but it really pulls the whole look together and adds to that warm, bougie copper vibe. I had some Krylon Premium Metallic spray paint (in Copper Brilliance) laying around from a previous project so I used that but you can use any craft paint you like. Tape off a line about 2 3/4" from the end of the dowel. Apply paint in thin coats and allow plenty of dry time between each pass. When the last coat is good and dry, remove the tape and your candle snuffer is good to use for your next spa day!
P.S. - I tested this DIY out while burning the Caramel Latte candle and let me tell you... it is SO GOOD!!! I definitely recommend!
