Five (5) Ways You Should Include Candles in Your Self-Care Routine
Self-care is a huge buzz word in the wellness industry right now, and for a good reason! Self-care encompasses every aspect of your health (i.e. mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical). If you are not incorporating self-care into your daily life, it is definitely something that you should make a priority. Everyone should spend a little time showing themselves some love on a daily or weekly basis... It also doesn't hurt that you don't have to spend a ton of money doing it either.
Candles are one of the many inexpensive ways to start practicing self-care. You may be wondering, "how exactly can a candle help me take better care of myself?" Candles fall under the category of one of our most powerful, natural senses, smell. Think about it - have you ever walked past a restaurant and the smells floating from it triggered a happy memory? Smells create strong, emotional links in your brain. If you smell the same scent again years later, it can potentially trigger a pleasant feeling of nostalgia. Scents can have positive effects on mood, stress reduction, sleep enhancement, self-confidence, and physical and cognitive performance. Clearly, using candles can be a great way to show yourself some love.
Here are five (5) ways you can incorporate candles into your self-care routine and also five (5) suggestions for which of our candles you can use during each activity.
1.) Meditation
We could type a whole post on the different types of meditation to practice, but we'll simply explain its importance. Meditation is the practice of resting the mind. In today's busy world, we are constantly being bombarded with information. Our minds never truly get the opportunity to rest, which is why incorporating meditation into a self-care routine is important.
If you're finding your mind restless and wandering at night, or you're feeling overwhelmed and anxious, you may need to spend a few minutes meditation. Our Lavender scented candles would be wonderful to pair with this activity because of its natural soothing and relaxing properties.
2.) Read a Book
We've heard about the benefits of reading books since we were kids, but when was the last time you actually sat down and read a book front to back? Reading a book for fun is a great an inexpensive way to provide a little rest and relaxation for yourself. You can go to your local library or bookstore and pick up a copy of a book in your favorite genre.
Or, you could always bring the coffee shop vibes home to you! Make yourself a cup of joe, open your book, and light our delightful Caramel Coffee Latte scent. It'll be sure to get you in the mood to read that book cover to cover.
3.) Take a Bath/Shower
Sometimes after you've had a long day, taking a long bath or shower is just the thing you need to unwind. Sometimes, the simple things in life provide the biggest benefits. We suggest our Ocean Breeze or Eucalyptus scents to go along with your brief escape from the world. Not only will our ocean scent have you feeling like you're at the beach, it also ushers in feelings of tranquility to help you find some peace-of-mind at the end of a stressful day. Our Eucalyptus scent provides a cooling, mint-like aroma that, along with a steamy shower, can open up a stuffy nose during those cold, winter months.
We also have bath bombs you can pair with the candle, in case you want to add some relaxing scents to your bath water.
4.) Yoga
Physical exercise is one of the best ways to show yourself a little love. While running or weightlifting may not be your thing, yoga is a great way to ease into a physical routine. Yoga not only provides the benefits of increased flexibility, muscle strength, and tone, but it also has great mental health benefits as well. It can reduce anxiety and stress, improve sleep quality, improve symptoms of depression, and even potentially reduce inflammation. Start out slowly by practicing a few times a week - we suggest creating a warm, inviting atmosphere with our Mermaid Daydream or Vanilla Cupcake candles to help liven up your routine.
5.) De-clutter Your Living Space
If you’ve been feeling lately that your space is overwhelming you, then maybe it’s time to get rid of some things.
We know cleaning is not something you picture as taking care of yourself... But think about it, if you had fewer things to keep clean, it would definitely open up more time for you to do something you love instead. You can start off by doing one small space at a time.
While you’re cleaning, light our Hibiscus candle to create a positive memory of the experience. This tropical melon scent will make you think of being on a tropical island and the next time you light this candle while you’re cleaning, it will be associated with a clean, beautiful smell.
Starting a self-care routine doesn't have to be hard. It can be such a rewarding change to see the way loving yourself will positively impact your overall health. By taking these first few steps, you can create monumental change in your life by creating simple, but great habits.
